| StandUp-SpeakOut (S.U.S.O) was founded in the spring 2004, a community outreach program against domestic violence and sexual assault. Founder Monica Daye organized S.U.S.O's first series of community events in April 2005 to promote awareness on violence against women. S.U.S.O also launched its first community-wide collection drive in April and October 2005-- Since the launching of S.U.S.O, the services have expanded which has led the small outreach program that once worked with only women to the direction of also working with youth. Ms.Daye realized the effect violence had on her life as a teen, and the impact art therapy made in her healing process. The passion behind the organization is ignited from the founder's personal story. Ms. Daye was raped at a church convention at the age of 11; a teenage run-away, and in her first abusive relationship at the age of 13. Bad choices, and hanging with the wrong crowd lead Daye to a youth detention facility and classified as a juvenile delinquent at the age of 14—she was incarcerated for two years. After her release from the youth detention facility Daye became a victim again. In search for love and security she found herself wrapped in the arms of another abusive man at the age of 16. Through the mysterious healing of poetry she promotes strength; sharing her story through the art of spoken word. |
OUR MISSION WHAT IS ART THERAPY
|
To provide transitional development and therapeutic healing through art therapy for children, and teens who have witnessed, and/or been a victim of domestic violence, sexual or child abuse. |
Art Therapy is the therapeutic use of art making through the use of metaphors, and figurative language, painting, sculpting, music, dance, and poetry. Through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self worth while learning creative methods to manage symptom-related stress in conjunction with traumatic experiences. |
